Meta has announced some important changes to its Messenger app. Starting in September, support for SMS messages will be discontinued in Messenger. This will affect millions of users who prefer Messenger as their default messaging app.

Facebook Messenger is dropping SMS support for Android

Following a new announcement from Meta, it was announced that Messenger’s SMS feature will be canceled. As of September 28, 2023, it will not be possible to see SMS messages in the Messenger app.

Messenger started serving as the default messaging app on Android devices in 2016. It allowed users to view all their messaging in the app, including texts that did not come from Messenger. However, Facebook reversed course and removed this functionality.

Facebook renames Watch to Video, adds new features

Facebook's latest update renames 'Watch' tab to 'Video,' introducing editing tools for reels, improved audio features.

In a statement, Facebook advised Android users to change their default messaging app so they can send and receive messages. After September 28, this will happen automatically.

If you use Messenger as the default messaging app on your Android device, we recommend switching to a different app. You can also use third-party apps, but Google’s own Messages app will automatically become the default.

Details about the removal of the feature from Facebook are unclear, but the move is attributed to several factors. First, Messenger doesn’t support modern messaging standards like RCS. This suggests that Meta doesn’t want to work more in this area. It’s worth noting that Google Messages has RCS support.
